First Gen Corp. was recognized by the Institutional Investor Corporate Awards as one of Southeast Asia’s top companies in 2021. The company bagged the most number of awards in the Philippines by leading perceptions-based poll in Hong Kong measuring top companies’ performance in financial management, adherence to corporate governance, integrated reporting/ corporate social responsibility and investor relations.
The first and only corporate-institutional investor poll focused in Southeast Asia accorded the special recognition in line with its 11th anniversary through its publication Alpha Southeast Asia (ASA).
The poll identifies and recognizes SE Asia’s most outstanding listed companies in various markets and sectors. More than 500 investors and analysts across the region - as well as US and Europe -participated in this year’s voting, where over 3000 votes were received for publicly-listed companies as being the most outstanding in their sectors and markets. The participants included fund managers with investment interests in Southeast Asia, large institutional investors, insurance companies, pension funds, hedge funds, private banks, equity and fixed income brokers as well as buy and sell-side analysts
ASA grouped the results of the survey “by country.” It explained: “Instead of ranking two-dozen odd companies, we have once again uniquely narrowed investor choices down to top [three] in each of the five main award categories.”
The Philippines’ leading provider of clean and renewable energy, the First Gen Corp., led the country’s best-managed companies, followed by the SM Investments Corp., the Lucio Tan Group, ICTSI and Integrated Micro-electronics.
The power generator firm also notably bagged the best annual report in the Philippines.
The poll rankings also listed the Lopez-led First Gen Corp. as the Most Organized Investor Relations Company and top second with the 'Strongest Adherence to Corporate Governance Company' and with the 'Most Consistent Dividend Policy' categories.
First Gen Corp.'s portfolio of power plants runs on renewable energy sources such as geothermal, hydro, wind and solar. It also also owns and operates power facilities that run on natural gas, considered the cleanest form of fossil fuel. As of 2020, the installed capacity of these power plants totalled 3,495 MW. It is a subsidiary of Lopez-led First Philippine Holdings Corporation, one of the biggest and diversified Philippine conglomerates.
The full detailed results and analysis of the poll will be published in the August/ September 2021 issue of Alpha Southeast Asia.
