Emerging economies face a crucial need to strengthen their power infrastructure, as industrial growth gives way to rising demand for electricity and energy efficiency.

With more than 45 years of experience as the Philippines’ pioneering manufacturer of distribution transformers, First Philippine Electric Corp (First Philec) stands to be the partner of choice for Asia-Pacific collaborations in quality power generation, transmission and distribution.

“We are a total solutions provider for the utility, commercial, industrial and property markets, and the supplier of choice in customer value,” says Ariel Ong, First Philec managing director. “With more than 50 per cent market share in the Philippines, we could easily be the largest Southeast Asian amorphous transformer manufacturer.”

A subsidiary of First Philippine Holdings – a member of the Lopez Group and one of the country’s largest conglomerates with businesses in power generation and distribution, real estate and construction – First Philec focuses on manufacturing and technology-related investments in energy utilities.

Apart from producing a wide range of single- and three-phase transformers, the company offers packaged substations, switch gears and maintenance services for major electric power equipment.

“Our advantage covers understanding customers better than competitors, providing customised solutions, and having an integrated regional supply chain with partners in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, China and Taiwan,” Ong says.

“While we want a geographically compact supply chain, we prioritise understanding our suppliers thoroughly – their competitive advantages and their strategies.”

With the Asia-Pacific poised to dominate the anticipated US$53.6 billion global electricity transformers market by 2017, First Philec is open to regional and global joint ventures, and is keen on partnering with other power transformer manufacturers.

“We are looking for long-term partners who are willing to invest in a mutually beneficial and brighter tomorrow,” Ong says.
