2009

Mr. Juan B. Santos was elected as an independent director of First Philippine Holdings Corporation (First Holdings) last June 4, 2009. With the numerous executive positions held in both the private and public sectors, Mr. Santos brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the First Holdings board.

Mr. Santos was the former Chairman of Nestlé Philippines, Inc. and its first Filipino president as well. He was also a former Secretary of Trade and Industry, and was given the distinction by the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) as the 1994 Management Man of the Year Awardee.

In addition to his corporate posts, Mr. Santos was also Chairman of several foundations, namely: the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, Philippine Business for the Environment and the Foundation for Rural Electrification of Economic Development. He currently sits in the Advisory Board of Coca-Cola Philippines Inc., and East West Seeds Corp.

He graduated from the Ateneo de Manila in 1960 with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and took his postgraduate degree at the Thunderbird Graduate School of Management in Arizona, USA. He also completed an Advance Management Course at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Mr. Santos replaces former Senator Vicente T. Paterno, who has resigned for health reasons after being a First Holdings director for the past six years. He served as a Philippine Senator from July 1987 to June 1992, and was also Chairman and President of the Philippine National Oil Corporation (PNOC) from March 1986 to February 1987. He likewise served as Secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways and is founding Chairman of Philippine Seven Corporation. Senator Paterno was also Chairman of the Board of Investments from 1970 to 1979. He was elected as an independent director of First Holdings in 2003.

With these changes, First Holdings Chairman and CEO Oscar M. Lopez remarked, “I wish to thank Senator Paterno for his many, many years of service not only to First Holdings but to the Lopez Group as a whole, starting from his Meralco days in the early 1960s. He will always be considered as one of the pillars of this conglomerate. On the other hand, we eagerly welcome Mr. Santos to the First Holdings board. We hope that his management talent and expertise will help the company soar to even greater heights.”

The board, officers and staff of First Holdings wish to express their utmost gratitude to Senator Paterno for his invaluable contributions to the company.
