Climate change is a global concern that permeates and touches all aspects and dimensions of our lives. In our highly interconnected world, global warming has serious effects on not only weather patterns, sea levels, and natural disasters, but also on international as well as local economics, business, politics, agriculture and food security, health, biodiversity and ecology, and even peace and conflict. Because of the magnitude and urgency of the issue at hand, coming up with an adequate solution is only possible when the global community commits to making widespread and fundamental changes to the damaging industrial practices and patterns that have long accompanied – and driven – modern life.

Aside from the cooperation and coordination of stakeholders from the academe, from the public and private sectors, and from a wide range of industries, responding to the complex problem of climate change also necessitates a two-pronged approach – one that involves both climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Mitigation initiatives aim to slow down and control the process of climate change by reducing the emission of heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Mitigation efforts are preventive, and seek to align the way communities and industries behave and operate toward a low-carbon future.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, climate change mitigation efforts can be as simple as tweaking product designs and making older equipment more energy efficient, or as complex as drafting a plan for an entire city and completely abolishing coal-fired power plants in favor of renewables.

But the truth is that even if the world is successful in its goal of keeping global warming below 2°C for the next several years, many destructive changes have already been set in motion. Adaptation initiatives aim to lower the risks of these impacts of climate change, especially for vulnerable countries and populations disproportionately affected by global warming – who are also among the poorest and least able to respond.

Climate change adaptation efforts seek to lower sensitivity to climate hazards while building the resilience and adaptive capacities of communities. These can include adapting building codes to extreme weather events and climate conditions, building flood defenses, and developing drought-tolerant crops.

Generally, mitigation efforts are focused on targeting the causes of climate change, while adaptation efforts are focused on addressing its impacts. Sometimes, however, these initiatives may overlap. Both are an essential part of addressing climate change today, and for the long run.
